What students learn
Bellevue Hill Public School is committed to excellence in education. As such, all our programs are differentiated to cater for all students’ needs. Students are individuals who learn at different rates and in different ways. These individual differences may influence how students respond to instruction and how they demonstrate what they know, understand and can do. Our teachers take the time to get to know students so that they can plan, program, teach and assess students in a manner which is fair and flexible, provides an appropriate level of challenge, and engages students in learning in meaningful ways.
Students at Bellevue Hill Public School engage with the full NSW curriculum, developing strong foundational skills across all key learning areas. Through rich, varied learning experiences, they build knowledge, think creatively and develop the capabilities they need for success both at school and beyond.
The NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) sets the curriculum for all Kindergarten to Year 12 students in NSW. In primary school, students learn within six key learning areas, building knowledge and skills that prepare them for future learning.
Stages of learning:
Learning is organised across four stages:
Early Stage 1 (Kindergarten), Stage 1 (Years 1-2), Stage 2 (Years 3-4) and Stage 3 (Years 5-6).
English
English is mandatory from Kindergarten to Year 12. Students learn to understand and use the English language through written, spoken and visual texts of increasing complexity. Learning in English develops communication skills essential for intellectual, social and emotional growth.
At Bellevue Hill Public School, we aim to foster a love of literature and learning. Students are supported to experiment with ideas, express themselves confidently, work collaboratively and develop the skills to become independent, lifelong learners.
Mathematics
Students learn to work mathematically by developing fluency, understanding, problem-solving and reasoning. Learning experiences are hands-on and connected to real-life contexts, helping students apply mathematical thinking with confidence.
Human society and its environment (HSIE)
Through History and Geography, students learn about people, places, cultures and environments. They examine past and present events, explore their community and develop the skills needed to understand and contribute to an ever-changing world.
Science and technology
Students investigate the natural and made worlds using scientific inquiry and design processes. Through experimentation and problem solving, they build curiosity, creativity and technological skills that prepare them for future learning.
Personal development, health and physical education (PDHPE)
Students learn about health, safety, wellbeing and physical activity through a balanced and engaging PDHPE program. They develop the knowledge and skills to make healthy decisions, build positive relationships and participate confidently in movement and sport. Wellbeing is an essential part of this learning area: students explore resilience, emotional regulation, help-seeking strategies and social skills that support them both in and beyond the classroom. Our aim is to help every child feel safe, connected and ready to learn while developing lifelong habits for physical, social and emotional wellbeing.
Creative arts:
Creative arts is mandatory from Kindergarten to Year 6. Students explore dance, drama, music and visual arts, learning to make, perform, compose, appreciate and respond to a variety of artworks and performances. Each art form develops unique skills, concepts and creative understandings that enrich students’ lives.
At Bellevue Hill Public School, we also alternate a whole-school Musical and a whole-school Art Show each year, providing students with rich opportunities to showcase their creativity.
Languages
Bellevue Hill Public School offers three language programs for all students: Italian, Russian and Hebrew.
Language learning helps students develop communication skills, understand how languages work and explore the relationship between language and culture. Students engage with linguistic and cultural diversity and reflect on their own experiences and interactions.

At Bellevue Hill Public School, students take part in special religious education (SRE) or special education in ethics (SEE) classes, depending on what’s available. These classes are delivered by approved providers.
When enrolling your child, you’ll be able to choose an option from the approved providers offered at our school.

These classes are held weekly on a Friday for 30 minutes and are taught by approved volunteers from each organisation.
All SRE/SEE providers must be approved by the NSW Department of Education and follow an approved curriculum enabling students to learn more about and engage with their religion. Every provider must have a link to their curriculum scope and sequence on their website.
SRE and SEE teachers are encouraged to use a variety of teaching activities including writing, craft, small groups, class discussion, songs, drama, storytelling, games and new learning technologies.

High potential and gifted education (HPGE)
At Bellevue Hill Public School, we recognise that students develop at different rates and in different ways. Some students demonstrate advanced potential or talent in areas such as creativity, problem solving, leadership, the physical domain or specific academic subjects. We are committed to identifying and nurturing these strengths early so that every student is challenged, engaged and able to thrive.
Our approach is guided by the NSW Department of Education’s High Potential and Gifted Education Policy, which ensures all students, regardless of background, have access to rich learning experiences, explicit talent development opportunities and differentiated teaching practices across the intellectual, creative, social emotional and physical domains.
Teaching and Learning at BHPS
We have a strong, whole school focus on developing high potential in all learners. From Kindergarten to Year 6 we promote an inquiry based learning model that builds deep thinking, creativity, collaboration, communication and critical thinking skills.
Our innovative learning spaces support flexible grouping, targeted instruction and opportunities for students to work at their point of challenge. Many of our teachers have completed specialised HPGE professional learning and embed strategies such as curriculum compacting, enrichment, extension and acceleration where appropriate.
We also offer a range of programs and initiatives to further support high potential and gifted learners, including:

Every teacher differentiates their instruction to meet individual needs, adjusting content, pace, depth and complexity to ensure students are continuously growing.
The 5 and 6 REACH Class (HPGE Class)
Students in Year 5 and 6 may be considered for placement in our REACH class, which is designed for high potential and gifted learners. Selection is based on a broad range of data collected throughout the year, including assessments, classroom performance, teacher observation and evidence of high potential across any of the four HPGE domains.
All students are considered annually. Placement is not automatically carried over as children develop at different rates. Our goal is to place every student in the learning environment that best supports their growth.
To ensure a rich and non repetitive curriculum, Stage 3 content is structured into even year and odd year cycles. Learning is then differentiated within the class to cater for the diverse strengths, needs and readiness levels of both Year 5 and Year 6 students.

Learning at Bellevue Hill Public School: Bellevue Hill Public School is committed to preparing students to be citizens in a future world. To achieve this we offer innovative, research-based practice to equip and inspire our students to seek out problems and solve them as we deliver the Department of Education’s NSW Curriculum.
Our aim is to ensure that we develop students’ skills and dispositions using inquiry-based learning. The use of an over arching concept deepens students’ learning as they are engaged in a rich learning environment. This allows students to solve real-world problems using inquiry as they develop their critical and creative thinking skills, ability to problem solve, research skills and ability to prioritise.
Our future-focused, innovative learning environments provide a variety of flexible learning spaces, each with a dedicated learning purpose which encourages students to maximise their potential. Using an ‘inquiry’ approach, teachers are able to use student centred teaching and learning principles that move students forward on the learning continuum. Students gain the skills, attributes and knowledge of how to apply these to specific subjects to gain an understanding of the major concepts and big ideas.

We support every student’s academic progress by:
- checking their progress and giving clear and timely feedback
- setting learning goals with each student
- giving extra help with personalised plans and support from specialist staff
- reporting on each student’s learning progress so parents and carers know how their child is doing
- providing targeted literacy and numeracy support in small groups
